Job Description

IMPORTANT: These are 3-year, grant-funded positions supported by the Colorado Department of Education School Counselor Corps Grant (SCCG). Continued employment beyond the grant period may be possible if future funding becomes available, but it is not guaranteed. 

Temporary Educator Eligibility (TEE) Option 

Applicants who have not yet completed licensure may qualify for employment through Colorado's Temporary Educator Eligibility (TEE) Authorization, which allows eligible candidates to work while completing their preparation program.

The Secondary School Counselor delivers comprehensive counseling services aligned to the ASCA National Model with a specialized emphasis on Colorado's statewide Postsecondary "Big Three" priorities: 

  • In-Demand Industry Credentials 

  • College Credit aligned to a clear postsecondary pathway 

  • High-quality, real-world Work-Based Learning opportunities 

These priorities support state accountability goals related to postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and completion outcomes. 

This SCCG-funded role supports students' transitions from middle school through graduation and into postsecondary education, workforce training, apprenticeship programs, military service, or industry certification pathways—ensuring access and success for all learners. 

The counselor's work emphasizes keeping students engaged in the classroom, supporting academic achievement, fostering healthy peer-to-peer relationships, building resilience, and developing strong character. These foundational skills enable students to remain focused on their educational goals and successfully transition to postsecondary opportunities. 

The counselor leads academic planning, FAFSA completion efforts, graduation pathway coordination, college and career programming, postsecondary applications, and student intervention services. 

This role includes responsibility for implementing all required SCCG data collection, evaluation, and reporting activities. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Postsecondary & Academic Readiness 

Develop and implement a counseling program aligned with Colorado's Big Three framework. 

Support students with: 

  • Career exploration 

  • Industry credential pathway access 

  • College credit opportunities 

  • FAFSA completion and financial aid literacy 

  • Postsecondary applications 

  • Enrollment verification and persistence tracking 

Coordinate career fairs, college campus visits, work-based learning placements, and transition events. 

Student Services 

Provide individual and small-group counseling focused on: 

  • Academic planning and credit completion 

  • Graduation pathway tracking 

  • Postsecondary goal setting 

  • Classroom engagement and academic focus 

  • Building resilience and character development 

  • Developing healthy peer relationships and collaboration skills 

Develop attendance and achievement interventions based on student data that support students remaining engaged in class and focused on their academic and postsecondary goals. 

Transitions & Partnerships 

• Coordinate grade-level transitions. 

• Partner with colleges and universities, CTE programs, apprenticeship providers, employers, workforce agencies, military recruiters, and community organizations. 

Family Engagement 

Facilitate family workshops focused on: 

  • Graduation planning 

  • FAFSA completion and financial aid education 

  • Postsecondary transition support 

Collaboration 

Collaborate with administrators, educators, and MTSS teams to design academic and behavioral interventions that support students' classroom engagement, academic success, and postsecondary readiness. 

SCCG Data Collection & Accountability 

Conduct data collection, tracking, evaluation, and reporting aligned to Colorado Department of Education SCCG requirements. 

  • Monitor graduation progress and Big Three alignment. 

  • Administer needs assessments and surveys. 

  • Maintain accurate documentation of counseling services. 

Participate in SCCG state reporting submissions and continuous improvement cycles. 

Additional Responsibilities 

Perform other related duties as assigned that are consistent with the purpose of the SCCG program and the ASCA professional school counseling role. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Licensure 

Master's Degree in School Counseling or related field required 

Colorado Special Services Provider License with School Counselor endorsement 

—OR— 

Eligibility for Temporary Educator Eligibility (TEE) Authorization 

Experience & Skills 

Secondary counseling or postsecondary advising experience preferred. 

Knowledge of: 

  • Colorado graduation pathways 

  • College access, credentialing, and workforce pathway systems 

  • FAFSA and postsecondary transitions 

  • Data-driven intervention design 

  • ASCA National Model 

  • Strategies that promote classroom engagement and academic achievement 

  • Character development and resilience-building approaches for secondary students 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to facilitate classroom presentations, meetings, and community events. 

  • Frequent standing, sitting, and walking. 

  • Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
