Position Overview
La Veta School District RE-2 is seeking an experienced, organized, and student-focused Director of Nutrition Services to lead the district's food service program. This position is responsible for the daily operation of the school kitchen, USDA and CDE program compliance, menu planning, procurement, and supervision of kitchen staff. The Nutrition Services Coordinator works closely with the Business Manager on financial reconciliation and reporting related to food service operations.
Essential Functions
Program Compliance & Reporting
Administer the USDA National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) in full compliance with federal and state requirements.
Submit all required CDE Child Nutrition Program documentation, including monthly meal claims, annual applications, and program reviews.
Maintain accurate records for free and reduced-price meal eligibility, applications, and confidentiality requirements.
Coordinate annual program review and USDA Administrative Review preparation.
Ensure compliance with all food safety regulations, including HACCP plan maintenance and required documentation.
Menu Planning & Food Production
Develop nutritious, appealing menus that meet USDA meal pattern requirements for all age/grade groups served.
Accommodate documented dietary restrictions, food allergies, and individual student medical nutrition needs.
Oversee daily meal production and ensure consistent food quality, temperature standards, and portion control.
Maintain and update standardized recipes for volume production and nutritional compliance.
Procurement & Inventory
Manage all food and supply purchasing within district procurement policies; submit all purchase orders to the Business Manager for approval prior to placement.
Solicit bids and quotes in compliance with applicable federal and district procurement thresholds.
Maintain accurate inventory records; oversee receiving, storage, rotation, and waste reduction.
Participate in Colorado Purchasing Cooperative or comparable group purchasing programs where advantageous.
Financial Management
Operate within the approved nutrition services budget; bring requests for unbudgeted expenditures to the Business Manager for review and approval.
Coordinate all cash receipts, meal payment processing, deposits, and financial reconciliation with the Asst. BM.
Monitor meal participation rates and revenue; prepare regular financial summaries and trend reports for the Business Manager.
Concessions & Athletic Events
Manage district concession operations for home athletic events in cooperation with the Athletic Director.
Ensure concession operations comply with food safety standards including proper food handling, temperature control, and sanitation.
Coordinate concession cash handling with the Asst. BM; forward all proceeds following established district financial controls.
Kitchen Operations & Staff Supervision
Supervise, schedule, and evaluate kitchen staff; provide training and coaching to support performance and compliance.
Maintain a safe, clean, and organized kitchen environment consistent with health department standards.
Conduct and document regular food safety inspections and temperature logs.
Serve as the district's point of contact for health department inspections and corrective action follow-up.
Catering & Special Events
Plan and prepare meals for district staff-only days including professional development and in-service days.
Prepare food and coordinate catering for occasional after-school and weekend district events as assigned.
Catering assignments outside the regular work calendar will be compensated consistent with district policy; the Nutrition Services Coordinator will be given reasonable advance notice for all special event requests.
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent.
ServSafe Food Manager Certification (or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire).
Minimum two years of experience in school nutrition, institutional food service, or food production management.
Knowledge of USDA NSLP and SBP program requirements and federal nutrition standards.
Strong organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage multiple operational priorities simultaneously.
Physical ability to stand for extended periods (4+ hours), lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and work in varying temperatures.
Preferred
School Nutrition Association (SNA) credential or certification, or willingness to pursue.
Experience with Colorado Department of Education Child Nutrition Programs and CDE reporting systems.
Experience with school district financial software or food service management platforms.
Supervisory experience in a kitchen or food service setting.
Physical & Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in a school kitchen environment. Requires extended standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Regular exposure to hot cooking equipment, cold storage areas, and cleaning chemicals. Occasional early morning start times required to ensure meal readiness. This position follows the district's four-day school week calendar (Monday–Thursday), with Fridays scheduled once per month.
