Direct Supervisor: Rose Swenson, Elementary Principal

Contracted Length Term: Aug-May position (163 days)

Salary: A competitive salary commensurate with education and experience ranging from $43,823 - $83,687

SUMMARY OF POSITION

South Routt Elementary School seeks an inspiring music teacher who is responsible for teaching music education to students in grades ECC-5th Grade focusing on the improvement and appreciation of music instruction. This teacher should help students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through a variety of planned music experiences which include singing, moving to music, playing of instruments and listening and performs other duties directly related to this job description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Develops and refines music curriculum based on Colorado Academic Standards for Music PK-5 including creating, performing, and responding.

Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students.

Provides opportunities for performance or supporting performances.

Plans, rehearses, and directs students in three musical programs for school and community (Veteran’s Day, Winter Concert, Spring Concert).

Differentiate music curriculum to meet the needs of the individual student and the student body.

Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.

Evaluates each student’s musical growth and contribution to the performance of the group that allows everyone to contribute.

Communicates clearly with parents and school faculty/staff on the progress of individual students.

Maintains care/responsibility and inventory of school-owned music, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse.

Cooperation with Principal and staff in providing musical programs for school assemblies, open house, parent meetings and seasonal programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum BA in Music or Music Education

Ability to work with musicians at all skill levels

Strong instrumental skills, including piano accompaniment

Knowledge of: Basic concepts of child growth and development, and developmental behavior characteristics; Student behavior management strategies and techniques;

Knowledge of technology and prior experience working with children in the field of literacy is highly encouraged.

Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar; Basic arithmetic concepts; Routine record management, storage, and retrieval systems and procedures.

Ability to: Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups; Communicate effectively in oral and written form; Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment; Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of a positive educational environment; Understand and carry out oral and written directions; Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults.

•Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 5 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.

•This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve moving quickly, being stationary for brief periods.

•Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far visual acuity, depth perception providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

The Soroco Middle School has been designated as “A School to Watch” by the Colorado Assoc. of Middle Level Educators.

Student Days are Monday-Thursday, and staff work 1-2 Fridays for month for professional development, conferences and prep days.
