Position Overview:
The One-on-One Special Education Paraprofessional will provide individualized support for a student diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This role is critical in helping the student access the general education curriculum, develop social-emotional and self-regulation skills, and build independence within the school environment. The paraprofessional will work closely with the classroom teacher, special education team, related service providers, and family to implement the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide direct support to the assigned student throughout the school day in both general education and special education settings.
• Assist the student with maintaining attention, following directions, staying on task, and completing assignments.
• Implement behavior support strategies and reinforce positive behavior as outlined in the student’s IEP and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).
• Support social interactions with peers, fostering communication, cooperation, and inclusion.
• Facilitate and model self-regulation and coping strategies to help the student manage transitions and sensory needs.
• Assist with academic tasks, including reading, writing, math, and other subject areas, by providing modified instruction and accommodations as directed by teachers.
• Provide prompts, cues, and reinforcement to encourage independence while avoiding over-reliance on adult support.
• Support with organizational skills, materials management, and daily routines.
• Assist with personal care needs if identified in the IEP (may include toileting, hygiene, or feeding support).
• Collect data on student performance and behavior to share with the teaching team.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists, and administrators to adjust supports and strategies as needed.
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information at all times.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher in education or related field preferred.
• Previous experience working with children, particularly students with ASD and/or ADHD, strongly preferred.
• Ability to follow directions and implement instructional and behavioral strategies designed by teachers and specialists.
• Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
• Patience, flexibility, and a calm demeanor in challenging situations.
• Commitment to fostering inclusion, independence, and student success.
Work Environment:
• This position requires working in classrooms, small groups, and one-on-one settings.
• May involve physical activity such as standing, walking, bending, or assisting with student mobility.
• Requires responsiveness to both academic and behavioral needs in a dynamic school environment.
